Overview of our AI Ethics Framework
Our AI Ethics framework is built around five operational pillars that you have to consider in your deliberations:
1. Transparency & Explainability
Challenge: Many AI models are black boxes, making decisions no one can explain — not even their developers.
Risk: Lack of transparency undermines accountability, exposes you to legal challenges, and violates the EU AI Act.
What to do:
- Implement Model Cards and Explainability Reports to document how your AI models make decisions.
- Use tools such as SHAP, LIME, or counterfactual explanations to provide interpretable outputs.
- Ensure explanations are tailored to different audiences — e.g., regulators, users, internal audit.
Compliance Link: EU AI Act (Art. 13) mandates meaningful information about logic, significance, and consequences of AI.
2. Bias Prevention & Fairness
Challenge: AI systems trained on skewed datasets can embed or amplify societal biases.
Risk: Discriminatory outcomes can trigger litigation (e.g., employment, lending) and reputational damage.
What to do:
- Conduct pre-deployment bias audits on models that impact people (hiring, lending, benefits, etc.).
- Implement ongoing fairness monitoring, not just one-time checks.
- Define acceptable fairness thresholds, and use counterfactual fairness testing to ensure parity.
Compliance Link: Discrimination is prohibited under multiple laws (e.g., EU Charter of Fundamental Rights, Title VII in the U.S.). Bias mitigation is not optional in high-risk systems under the AI Act.
3. Privacy & Security Compliance
Challenge: AI systems often process sensitive personal data, which increases privacy risks.
Risk: Inadequate safeguards can result in GDPR violations, data breaches, and customer distrust.
What to do:
- Apply data minimization and anonymization techniques for model training and inference.
- Conduct DPIAs (Data Protection Impact Assessments) for all AI systems that process personal data.
- Align data processing policies with GDPR, ePrivacy Directive, and local data laws.
Compliance Link: The EU AI Act works in tandem with the GDPR. Organizations must demonstrate lawful basis, purpose limitation, and proportionality in AI use.
4. Accountability & Human Oversight
Challenge: Who is responsible when AI causes harm, makes a wrong decision, or violates policy?
Risk: Lack of clear accountability creates governance gaps, audit failure, and legal exposure.
What to do:
- Assign a dedicated AI Ethics or Compliance Officer responsible for oversight and escalation.
- Ensure human-in-the-loop decision-making for high-impact AI systems (especially in HR, finance, health).
- Document responsibility chains for each AI system — including developers, data owners, and compliance leads.
Compliance Link: Article 14 of the AI Act requires effective human oversight to prevent risks. Accountability is key to liability management under forthcoming AI liability directives.
5. Continuous Monitoring & Improvement
Challenge: AI models degrade over time and can drift, introducing new risks unnoticed.
Risk: Compliance deteriorates post-deployment, and undetected changes can introduce fairness, accuracy, or safety concerns.
What to do:
- Define and apply AI performance KPIs tied to ethical indicators (e.g., fairness, false positive rates, drift).
- Conduct quarterly model audits and retrain or retire models as needed.
- Use tools like AI Ethics Scorecards to track and report on compliance over time.
Compliance Link: The EU AI Act (Art. 61-63) emphasizes post-market monitoring and risk-based controls. The AI lifecycle must include feedback loops and updates.
